"We only make music that activates the chakra" - Lil Silva

A question to mull over...Who’s the next legend of UK electronic music?

Is there a clear contender that pops to your mind? Maybe Jamie XX, Floating Points, or someone deeper underground.

Well a looming new contender has emerged from the humble shadows. Lil Silva. A huge influence in the local UK scene, who is making waves worldwide with the release of his debut album Yesterday Is Heavy.

It’s not an album that was created overnight. Lil Silva has been honing his craft and personal sound for well over a decade. Since the first tracks in 2008, it has been a constant hustle of singles, EPs, and production for stars like Adele. A joint album in 2021 as half of house duo OtherLiine. But this year, his debut solo album dropped to massive industry acclaim.

Yesterday Is Heavy features a superstar supporting cast that attest to Lil Silva’s reputation amongst musicians. Sampha, BADBADNOTGOOD and Little Dragon each feature on the album.

One listen and you’ll realise the man is a genius. It’s not a word to throw around lightly. But as far as debut albums go, it’s a masterpiece of craft and production. There’s nothing superficial about any of the tracks. They weave together to add a different emotion to the overall sonic tale.

It’s definitely not the album of someone new to the scene, but someone deeply involved in the evolution of music culture – “the lineage of the UK club sound”. The title of the album alone tells this an album about time, history, and evolution.

From the opening track “Another Sketch” it’s undeniably a unique sound. Composed of layers of electronic production, paired with searching songwriting and intriguing samples. It’s an extremely detailed style of sonic storytelling that continues to develop throughout the album.

It’s the artistic apex of current electronica, pushing the limits of what is possible with sound.

So do your ears a favour and listen to the full journey. With a spliff on a quiet night. On your headphones at the gym. Perhaps a 4am kick-on astral adventure. Whatever gets your energy elevated for the big set, sunset at NestFest 2023. Absolutely massive.
